What Ultimately Defines Us? Our Thoughts, or Actions?

#philosophy #thoughts #action #define #character #legacy

When gauging a person’s character, should their thoughts or actions be considered? Which one holds more sway and why? One argument asserts that a person’s thoughts should be given more weight because they are the source of all action. Meanwhile, another argument states that a person’s actions should be the ultimate consideration because they are tangible. Furthermore, people can mask their intentions through rhetoric but their action, or lack of action, will reveal their true character.

In this discussion, I examine the rationale for both arguments. Regardless of which element is given more sway, individuals should endeavour to align their thoughts and actions. In other words, be as consistent as possible. If one is consistent in thought and action, then they reduce the risk of hypocrisy and other negative character judgements.
